"I'll Never Love Again" is a vocal from the 2018 moving-picture show A Star Is Born, performed past its stars Lady Gaga and director Bradley Cooper whose character sings the final chorus in the flashback scene. The soundtrack contained both versions of the vocal including the extended version that featured Gaga every bit the sole performer. Gaga wrote the song with Natalie Hemby, Hillary Lindsey, and Aaron Raitiere. Both tracks were produced by Lady Gaga and Benjamin Rice.

When Gaga was getting ready to film the final scene of A Star Is Built-in, where she sings "I'll Never Love Over again", the singer got a telephone call that her childhood friend Sonja Durham was in her final moments of Stage IV cancer. Gaga left the gear up and collection to meet Durham, only she arrived ten minutes subsequently her friend died. She asked Durham'southward husband if she should return to filming; he replied, "You've gotta exercise what Sonja would want y'all to do", so she returned to the gear up. Co-star and director Bradley Cooper was supportive of Gaga'southward loss but Gaga was adamant nearly finishing the scene, then she stepped on the gear up and sang "I'll Never Beloved Over again". The vocalist said, "[Sonja] gave me a tragic gift that solar day and I took it with me to [the] set, and I sang that vocal for Jackson and for her on that very same day within an 60 minutes."[1]

Along with the film version, the soundtrack besides contains an extended version. In her review of the moving picture, Melina Newman of Billboard called the carol "stunning".[ten] The magazine'south Tatiana Cirisano ranked Lady Gaga's operation of "I'll Never Love Once more" as the film's best scene and wrote, "Not simply are the lyrics devastatingly beautiful, but Gaga/Ally showcases her full, skyscraper-high range."[xi] Jon Pareles of The New York Times compared the vocal to Harry Nilsson's "Without You" and Eric Carmen's "All by Myself", and complimented Gaga's "old-school finesse, timing, emotionality and lung ability".[12] Pitchfork 's Larry Fitzmaurice chosen the song a "stunning, heart-wrenching closer" and wrote, "... even though 'I'll Never Love Once again' is plenty effective on its own, the dialogue-included version of the song dramatically cuts out in its final seconds the same way the picture does: jumping back in fourth dimension from Gaga'south time-stopping operation to a pivotal and heartbreaking scene that simply enhances the song's emotional quotient".[xiii]

In his moving picture review, Ty Burr of The Boston Globe said Gaga'southward "climactic memorial" operation of the song "volition leave you a soggy mess whether you like it or not".[fourteen] Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter predicted the song would earn Gaga an Academy Accolade nomination for All-time Original Song.[15] USA Today 'due south Patrick Ryan wrote, "And with 'I'll Never Love Again,' the film'due south devastating emotional closer, Gaga gets her ain Whitney Houston moment, powering through a formidable number about beloved and loss with searing vulnerability and grace.
